some boys

it's only just occurred to me that my love affair with tina turner was cemented by a phenomenon that southern staters may not know about: the relationship between la turner and the national rugby league. in 1989, 'what you get is what you see' was used for a stunningly successful campaign to promote the nrl. this collaboration lasted well into the next decade and culminated in 'the best' becoming synonymous with the winfield cup. there were a series of commercials made over the years and the arrangement eventually spawned that duet with our very own working class hero, jimmy barnes. if you have a couple of minutes, it's worth watching this one through to the end, if only to remember that the rabbitohs can score tries.*

this is the later one, which is one of the coolest things i've ever seen.

there are more, should you care to explore the matter further. they make me so happy, and i can't tell if it's her general awesomeness or my sense-memory of being that young and hepped up. i remember my friends and i being so scandalised [read: titillated] by the open sexuality of these ads. i know the guys mostly look funny and dated now but they gave me the chills back then.

okay, maybe they still do.

*rugby league joke inserted despite low likelihood of anyone getting it.

i love tina turner!! i was thinking about her recently in all her big caramel-haired comeback glory. when she did 'what's love got to do with it' she was then the oldest woman to have hit the charts, at 44. but ole debs harry has since knocked that record on the head.

(i am obsessed with 'oldest women to have....', perhaps because of the inspiration it gives me in my advancing years.

I remember these ads! I also was confused about who Tina was, if she was Ostrayn or not, what this game was... Very strange.

miff, i'm so glad the confusion was, at some stage, brought to a close. and thank you for your sweet words of encouragement during the silence...x

susanna, isn't her hair mesmerising? she is a total sex bomb. and as far as rockin' out into advancing years, i think perhaps a top five is in order - hot nannas.

darling bonnie, i think your general interest in sport might be a good gauge for your potential interest in rugby league. strange indeed.

and anonymous bunnies supporter - APOLOGIA GRANDE! i got nothin' but love for the red and green, i promise. and you know what they say, every loss is one step closer to a win. or something. thanks for playing.
