food for thought
finally...something to share. a weekend of gastronomic indulgence stretches out behind me, and i can scarcely believe how well i've eaten in just a couple of days. what a treat! so if you live in melbourne-town, you can try these out for yourself, and if you don't, i can always take you there when next you bowl into town.
friday pm: mexicali rose on swan street, richmond.
charmingly low-rent outfit boasting huge servings of authentic mexican food, fairly cheap jugs of frozen margarita, and exceptionally good-looking wait staff. i adore this place, and the burrito colorado is highly recommended. oh, and CHURROS.
saturday am: cavallini on queens parade, clifton hill.
artisan bakery with an italian bent, and you know what that means? bombolini. and espresso. and ciabatta. and...a gorgeous little library full of italian classics to peruse when you're not looking at the dozens of old photographs covering the walls. they warmed our selection, they played swinging jazz and they whisked away the evidence when we were done - marvellous. being a new local for the baby doc, we were mightily impressed.
saturday pm: kanpai on chapel street, south yarra.
lunch at one of my favourite japanese joints in the city. my delightful companion and i split some ebi maki, beef tataki and gyoza. the food is always perfect at kanpai, and the outside tables proved an excellent vantage point to watch the passing parade, before promenading away ourselves.
saturday pm [later]: la maison de tracteurs à chenilles on a street, collingwood.
dinner with some very fine folk - i took bread from cavallini and we made a truly excellent carbonara. upon arrival i was offered a glass of french champagne, which was creamy and luscious and gone in a flash. many glasses of wine, a chocolate viennetta, and four episodes of flight of the conchords later, we called it a night.
sunday am: birdman eating on gertrude street, fitzroy.
is there anything more wonderful than having strong coffee and welsh rarebit delivered to your table in the sunshine by an exquisitely beautiful french waitress? okay, i'm sure everyone has a different idea of heaven but, for today, that's mine. the food at this place is bonkers good, but be prepared to wait for a table.
so there you have it, a magical mystery dining tour of the inner suburbs. i thoroughly recommend all of these places [though my friends a + a may be reticent to throw open their doors for paying customers, but you never know] and i also think that there's a lot to be said for the completely decadent decision to let other people bring you food all weekend [occasionally]. it feels like going away on holiday and, for me, it was worth every cent.
but it's beans on toast tonight, i reckon.

Funny. We were at Cavallini on Saturday too. Then we went to Degani. Stuffed ourselves.
Cavallini? Ooh, one of my favourite waitresses has started working there and keep recommending I go visit!
Perhaps we can have a coffee/lunch date there soon, miss? It's been an age since I saw you. I thought I spied your pretty mug at The Retreat the other night, but it was a doppelganger and I was bitterly disappointed.
xx
KEEPS recommending, not keep. I have a puppy jumping on my back as I type, slightly distracting...

Your carbonara was wonderful (and the leftover bread delicious for breakfast) - thanks for a great night.
Although I think I'll rename our place la maison des chenilles, as we don't have any heavy earthmoving equipment here at the moment.
Foux da fa fa!
caterpillar tractors!
ai-yah!
where is my brain?
bonnie, that is funny. you went next door after cavallini and kicked on? that is some serious commitment to baked goods.
jess, hello lovely! and yes, a rendezvous soon, please. i think frank and rufus would have a lot in common. perhaps some beers in the park while the boys frolic? talk soon...x
Oh my god, I'm so jealous. I have to eat every single meal out until our house is all ready, and tonight I tried the local diner where I ordered the 'fresh baked ham with fruit sauce' working on the theory that if you're going to be not kosher, then you should definately be not kosher. It came with a salad straight from the 80's (iceburg lettuce, pale white tom, and chunks of cucumber) then this plate of ham came out, and I'm not kidding, it was about the size of a human head and covered in gloopy gravy. Yay for the suburbs.
Oooh, the carbonara sounds delicious! we were out in the 'burbs for Dad's birthday, being stuffed with 'Mum food' - y'know, roast and chocolate mousse. How I adore food.
Next time you're up for a face-stuffing, lemme know, yeah?
oh jay, that sounds horrendous. and here i thought you had a down-home diner on every corner over there, serving tuna melts and bottomless cups of cawfee. wish you were here [or i was there]...x
suse, your saturday night dinner sounds pretty delish too. i love the mumsy dadsy food. my dad makes a weird concoction of tomato, onion and egg [to be served on toast] and i still make it when i miss him. oh, and as lunches are kind of impossible with this new job, let's dinner date soon...x
